The hiking route on the sunny side of the Ammer Valley has long since been a well-known and popular trail and is known as the "Altherrenweg".

Its continuation at Unterammergau enables you to hike all the way from Oberammergau to Bad Kohlgrub through the fields and meadows in the foothills of the Aufacker und Hörnle. This 12.2 kilometre route begins at the WellenBerg Adventure Pool in Oberammergau and takes you as far as the village of Sonnen, located in the district of Bad Kohlgrub.

The trail is at an average height of about 950 metres above sea level. During a walk of four hours, you will pass a large number of observation points offering wonderful views of the Ammer Valley and of the surrounding Ammergau Alps.

Turn-by-turn directions

The "Ammergauer Wiesmahdweg" takes you through the wide Ammer Mountain Valley at a slightly elevated height at all times.

Fabulous views of the peaks of the Sonnenberg opposite are guaranteed. Your route begins at the "WellenBerg" Adventure Pool in Oberammergau. Hike in the opposite direction of you wish to end your tour with a refreshing swim.

To start with, the hike follows the "Altherrenweg" uphill and down dale alongside the edge of the forest until you reach the Romanshöhe mountain inn, a location offering great views. From here, proceed below the Grünbichel continuing towards Unterammergau. After about 2 kilometres, turn off towards the Hörnle.

Shortly afterwards, you will need to make sure that you do not miss a turn-off into a forest path. This will take you along the "Enge Laine" and crosses the course of the stream as it descends from the Hörnle via a bridge. Keep left and continue along the tarred "Schaffer-Seppl-Rundweg".

About 300 metres later, take a sharp right turn at a cross roads and undertake the short climb up to the Kappel pilgrim church. The church is a good place to catch your breath and enjoy some more fantastic views. After the "Kappel", Wurmansau is your next destination.

The Wiesmahdweg leads through blossoming meadows for a short stretch before becoming a comfortable gravel pathway as you enter the idyllic village, which forms part of Saulgrub. Wurmansau had a population of 200 and a history that extends back to Roman times. A section of the "Via Claudia" from Tyrol led through the Ammer Valley to Augsburg.

Proceeding along this very Roman road, you will soon reach the Aura-Hotel, a highly reputed sanatorium for the blind and visually impaired. Turn off right and proceed across a meadow of gentians and past the votive beech to Kraggenau.

The final part of the route takes you through the hamlets of Sonnen and Linden to the nearby Bad Kohlgrub Tourist Information Centre, which is located in the centre of the village and features attractive spa gardens. From here, you can return to your starting point by bus or train.
