Looking at the map, you may well wonder what King Ludwig II was thinking when he decided to create his own homage to the French kings in such a backwater.

After enjoying a high-quality hiking experience across the absolutely flat Graszwang Valley surrounded by high mountains you will, however, begin to understand why this became his favourite place.

Author’s recommendation

Am Abend nach Führungsschluss hat man den Schlosspark fast für sich alleine und es herrscht eine magische Stimmung.

Linderhof Palace - Ettal/Linderhof

Turn-by-turn directions

This largely flat hike starts by taking you from Ettal Mill right across the idyllic Weidmoos Moor to the other side of the valley. You will pass the "small sources" of the River Ammer, which emerge from the middle of the wet meadows in the form of glass-clear bubbling springs.

After crossing Arme-Seelen-Straße from Oberammergau to Graswang, the hiking trail becomes a meadow pathway that leads along the foot of the Sonnenberg to the "Rahmbauernhöfe", the farmsteads in the hamlet of Rahm.

You pass Graswang to the North, enter the Kohlbach Valley and soon arrive at Linderhof Palace via the forest road. The cash desk for entry to the palace is located on the other side of the gardens. The gardens themselves may be visited without charge.

Those wishing to undertake a more thorough exploration of the house and park should plan to spend at least two additional hours. The large landscaped gardens contain well-known building works such as the Moorish Kiosk and the Venus Grotto. Children are sure to enjoy the guided tours specially created for them. All they need to do is ask in order to find out everything they want to know.
Those wishing to extend their tour can hike over to the southern side of the valley and return to Graswang via the Elmaugrieß stream. The small road branches off to the right to the idyllically located Dickelschwaig Forest Lodge.

After crossing the fast-flowing Kühalpen stream and passing the so-called "large sources" of the River Ammer, you will soon arrive back at your starting point at Ettal Mill.
