This hike takes you out of Oberammergau and straight through the Weidmoos Moor, a sedge fen with a number of high water islands. The area is famous for its spring snowflakes, and a short time later it is full of stemless gentians, bird's-eye primroses, globeflowers and orchids.

In fact, more than a dozen species of orchid bloom in the Weidmoos in the summer alongside marsh gentians, felwort and menyanthes.

Just before you arrive at your destination, Ettal Mill, you will pass a pond. This is a headwater, in which water that has seeped down into a huge underground body of gravel re-emerges. Mallards, tufted ducks and common merganser can all be observed.

On your return leg to Oberammergau, you will enjoy fabulous views of the Kofel, an imposing and distinctive mountain which consists of hard coral rock and was created vertically when the Alps were originally formed.

Destination

Ettal Mill

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike begins at the "Ammergauer Haus" and proceeds left down to the River Ammer. Keep left at the bridge and follow the path alongside the river leading towards Ettal. You will leave Oberammergau to the South.

As you go, the Ammer Valley widens out and views of Graswang will open up. The Scheinbergspitze and the Große Klammspitze dominate the western horizon.

In front of you is the Weidmoos Moor nature conservation area,, which you will cross via the Ammer causeway. At the next fork in the road, turn left at the bridge to the "Ettal Mill". Take a rest in the beer garden whilst the children enjoy themselves in the inn's playground.

The return journey will once again take you back to the Ammer and the causeway. Cross the bridge and keep right. Cross the river a little further downstream to arrive back at your starting point, the "Ammergauer Haus". (This route is also accessible via pram or child's cycle.)
