In the summer of 1858, the Bavarian King Maximilian II travelled from Lindau to Berchtesgaden over a period of five weeks.

The Alpine version of the "Maximiliansweg" follows the course of this royal journey at the northern edge of the Alps and offers a fabulous cross section of the Bavarian Alps between Lake Constance and the Königsee Lake.

Author’s recommendation

Auf der höchstgelegenen Riesen-Panoramaschaukel der bayerischen Alpen, an den Brunnenkopfhäusern, genießen Sie mit Schwung einen wunderbaren Blick ins Graswangtal.

Turn-by-turn directions

The Maximiliansweg is a long-distance trail extending over a total distance of over 350 kilometres.

Four stages are contained within the Ammergau Alps between the Tegelberg, Hohenschwangau and the small village of Grafenaschau at the for of the Hörnle.

We would like to present one part of this magnificent mountain hike to you here. Depending on preference and ability, this can be planned as a one-day or two-day version. If you wish to reach Linderhof Palace on the same day, we recommend taking the chair lift from Bad Kohlgrub to the Hörnle hut.

If you have more time, the whole route can be undertaken on foot. One option is to ascend your first summit of the tour by proceeding from here along the magnificent mountain route to the Hinteres Hörnle, enjoying the views of the lakes of the Alpine foothills along the way.

Returning to the Hörnle Hut, you may wish to fortify yourself with a sandwich. From here, you pass downhill along part of the Meditation trail to Unterammergau. Shortly before reaching the village, you pass the Kappel pilgrim church, the oldest church in the Ammer valley. At the opposite side of the village going out towards Steckenberg, the comfortable ascent to the August Schuster House on the Pürschling begins.

Enjoy some refreshments and views of the Zugspitze as you gather your energy for the finale of the tour, up a steep mountain trail to Linderhof Palace. Those who have two days to spare and experience of Alpine hiking can stay overnight at the August Schuster House before conquering the Teufelstättkopf on the next day.

This is then followed by a ridge walk to the Brunnenkopfhäuser and a skilful climb up the Große Klammspitze before also heading for Linderhof Palace.
