Turn-by-turn directions
Leave the car park by bike and continue on flat terrain in a southerly direction for about 5 kilometres into Elmaugries Valley (this section can also be hiked on foot). The climb begins even before the path makes a gentle right turn into Kuchelbach Valley. Leave your bikes here and ascend the Kuchelberg via a series of pleasant bends. Once you reach the top, the highlight of the tour begins.
From the Kuchelberg, enjoy the views as you may your way up the steep path to the Kuchelbergspitz. This is a vantage point at which you should treat yourself to a break, if you have not done so already.
The climb up to the highest peak in the Bavarian Ammergau Alps, the Kreuzspitze (2185 metres) now begins. As over the whole of the part of the journey over the ridge, the views take in the Wetterstein Mountains, the Lechtal Alps and the Alpine foothills. About halfway between Kuchelbergspitz and Kreuzspitze, a path from downhill on the left meets your uphill trail. This is the route that you will later use to return down into Kuchelbach Valley.
After climbing to the top of the Kreuzspitze, descend via the same route before turning right to go back down into the valley. Return to your bicycles by proceeding alongside the Kuchelbach stream and ride back to Graswang via the route that is now familiar to you.
