This tour begins in the Schleifmühl Gorge, where you will find out how the inhabitants of Unterammergau earned their living in past centuries from the manufacture of whetstones.

You then proceed via the high plain up to the Kuhalm. You are now in the former hunting grounds of the Wittelsbach dynasty. The Pürschlinghaus, which is already visible, was used for overnight accommodation on hunting trips by both King Maximilian and his son Ludwig II.

At the summit, fabulous views open up of the surrounding mountains and of Graswang Valley, in which Ludwig II built his legendary Linderhof Palace. After a short descent and a visit to the magnificent sun terrace of the Pürschling House, you return to your starting point via a forest road.

Author’s recommendation

Turn-by-turn directions

Starting from the hikers' car park at the grinding mill in Unterammergau, proceed up the forest road for 100 metres before entering directly into the Schleifmühl Gorge.

At the end of the gorge, follow the forest road towards the Kuhalm. When you arrive, leave the forest road to the left. The hiking trail up to the Teufelstättkopf begins here.
Shortly before the summit, the terrain becomes more rocky and exposed. A short secured path leads up to the summit.

The road back now will take to Pürschling Haus, where refreshments are available.

A forest road begins here which will take you back to the starting point of the tour via the beautifully situated St Joseph's Chapel.
