This hiking trail shows you how the elements of stone and water once secured the livelihood of an entire village whilst also providing a unique natural spectacle. The final highlight awaits you on the terrace of the Kolbensattel Hut in the form of a typical Bavarian culinary treat.

Turn-by-turn directions

The route from Oberammergau to the neighbouring municipality of Unterammergau provides an ideal way to warm up before moving onto the Schleifmühl Gorge from the hikers' car park at the Steckenberg.

As you meet various waterfalls, you will also pass by the former workplaces of the whetstone makers of the region – the grinding mills. Until into the last century, whetstones were still used to sharpen knives, scissors, scythes and the like. The inhabitants of Unterammergau mined these stones in the mountains and used the water power supplied by the grinding mills to create finished whetstones for shipping right across Europe.

After passing the grinding mills, continue through the gorge heading for the former royal hunting lodge the Pürschling House. At St. Joseph's Chapel, which is decorated with fresco paintings, turn left onto the ridgeway heading for the Kolbensattel.

This path provides continuously fabulous views towards the Hörnle, the Aufacker and the Alpine foothills.

After crossing the mountain forest to the Kolbensattel Hut, you will enjoy further majestic panoramas of the Laber and of Oberammergau.
