This is a highly enjoyable tour that has plenty to offer. There are breathtaking views of the Wetterstein, of the Allgäu and Lechtal Alps and of the lakes of the Alpine foothills.

The traverse of the Hochplatte also involves an airy ridge crossing, short rucksack climbs and a hole in the rock. The ascent via the Fensterl is somewhat more demanding than approaching the summit over the Weitalpjoch.

Both options, however, require a head for heights.

Author’s recommendation

Turn-by-turn directions

Leave the car park directly at the Ammerwaldalm via the forest pathway that passes the alm to the left and leads into the forest. As soon as you reach the Roggen Valley stream, turn off left onto the narrow path to the right of the stream bed.

After a few minutes, you will cross an old wooden bridge to the left-hand side of the stream. The path now twists its way more steeply up the slope. After about an hour, you will reach a turn-off at which you proceed left towards the "Fensterl".

You now climb through the Roggen Valley, moving towards the dip between the Hochplatte and Hochblasse. You will reach the col after a walk of a further hour. Fabulous views of the Allgäu and Lechtal Alps open up, to your right you will see the summit of the Krähe.

After a further 10 minutes, you finally reach the "Fensterl", a hole in the rocky summit ridge of the Hochplatte. Turn right at the "Fensterl". The ridge walk now begins. Below you are Lake Forggensee and the Ammergau. Both will accompany you for the whole of the ridge walk and will provide a fantastic panorama.

A few metres higher, the ridge becomes increasingly narrow and you will need to climb down an area secured by a wire rope. Continue up and down towards the summit cross, which you will reach in a few minutes.

The view from the summit is one of the best in the entire Ammergau Alps. Directly in front of you, you will see the Wettersteinblock containing Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze.

The descent is in an easterly direction. The path takes you along a well secured ridge before once again widening as you continue your descent. It levels out as you reach the Weitalpjoch.

From here, you bear left towards the Roggen Valley until you reach the turn-off familiar to you from your ascent. The descent of the last 400 metres takes you along this attractive pathway back to the Ammerwaldalm.
