The abbey is set in an enchanting location and was founded by Emperor Ludwig in 1330 upon his safe return to his homeland. Centuries later, King Ludwig II also admired the special location and built Linderhof Palace in the Graswang Valley only a few kilometres away.
A brief climb onto the Ochsensitz will make the motivations behind the building plans of the two royal personages even more clear. Breathtaking views of the Ammergau Alps, the Ester Mountains and the Wetterstein will accompany you as you make your way along the ridge and over the Zieglspitz to your destination – the Notkarspitze,
affectionately known by locals as the "Not". You descend into a corrie and continue down into the valley via a path and a steep twisting route. Once you arrive below, it is well worth while stopping off at Ettal Mill. Enjoy a refreshing drink and a tasty Bavarian snack before returning to the starting point of the tour, a journey of only 20 minutes.
