Although Martin Luther himself never visited Bad Rodach, the town still played an important role in Reformation history. At the beginning of July 1529, representatives of the Electorate of Saxony, Brandenburg-Ansbach, Hesse, Strasbourg, Nuremberg and Ulm met in the Church of St John in what is now Bad Rodach to try to prevent the threat of war with a Protestant defence league. In connection with the ‘Rodach Treaty’, they agreed on the ‘Rodach Notel’, a mutual but also military backup. These agreements were entered into the Schmalkaldic Constitution.

Luther’s trail continues to Heldburg, where the Protestant theologian Johann Gerhard, an important Lutheran clergyman, worked around 1000 years later. The church in Heldburg also has an interesting story attached to it – it was originally planned as a Catholic church, but was finished as a Protestant place of worship.

Author’s recommendation

A visit to the Deutsches Burgenmuseum (German Castle Museum), which opens in September 2016 at Heldburg Fortress, is well worth a visit. When the weather is fine you have a fantastic panoramic view of Coburg Fortress from the 45 metre high tower.
