Turn-by-turn directions

Even at the start, only half a kilometre away from the starting point at the Murnau Culture & Convention Centre, it is worthwhile to visit the Münter House, the former domicile of painter Gabriele Münter and her life companion, painter Wassily Kandinsky.

While you are walking further through an impressive grove of trees – a detour on the way leads to the “Lourdes Grotto”, which is hidden in a shady gorge and invites you to pray –fabulous views of the Murnau Moor and the chain of mountains behind it, along with the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, soon opens up. Only a short stretch further along, hikers can opt to visit “Ähndl” (also called Church of St. Georg), the oldest church in the Staffelsee region (built in the 8th century) and a stop off for refreshments in the adjacent beer garden or in the nearby Alpenhof.

The actual circular route continues towards a small waterfall known as “Drachenstich” and a romantic gorge, where legend has it that the Murnau Dragon is said to have eaten his many damsels. Over a small ridge you can reach the Staffelsee with its seven islands, where there are many opportunities to engage in sports and end the day relaxing in the Murnauer Bucht (“Murnau Cove”).
