Oberwesel or Damscheid/Hardt car park

Start at Schaarplatz in the heart of Oberwesel. Following the signs, you pass a medieval fountain and a small vineyard and take a narrow path to the Schützengraben. This leads north along the medieval town wall with its defence towers to St. Martin's Church, a former collegiate church built around 1350.After crossing the road, a narrow path leads uphill along old garden plots to the "Michelfeld". A little later, you reach the vantage point "Auf dem Kackstuhl". Here you have a wonderful view of the Rhine.Now the path climbs slowly up to the Hardthöhe and then continues across meadows and fields with fantastic views to the former Jewish cemetery, which covers an area of approx. 2,700 square metres. The oldest of the gravestones probably dates from 1718, the last burial took place on 25 January 1942.After another kilometre - first still uphill and then slightly downhill - we come to the "Rheingoldschänke", whose beautiful terrace invites us to take a break.Freshly refreshed, we follow the path through pastures, meadows and a short stretch of forest to the "Guckshöll", which offers us a fantastic view through the Niederbach valley to the Rhine with St. Martin's Church and the Cat and Ox Tower.From there, the path climbs again briefly past a fir tree shelter until the highest point of the tour is reached and you can enjoy the distant view in all directions. If you want to make a small detour to Damscheid, e.g. to take a look at the 12th century church of St. John the Baptist with its Romanesque tower, it is not far from here.Otherwise, head south to the "Hardt" hikers' car park and from there continue along a beautiful meadow path surrounded by flowering, fragrant bushes. After about 2 km, shortly after the "Hunsrück" lookout point, turn left onto a small path that leads back to Oberwesel after a few metres through Niederwald forest. Soon you come to a quarry where you can see the 300 to 400 million year old slate layers very clearly. The trail continues eastwards along vineyards that were initially fallow and then cultivated.
