Airfield Fliegerhorst Fürstenfeldbruck
Fakultät für Tourismus - Hochschule München - Digitales Marketing & Management Verified partner Explorers Choice
The Mitlitärflugplatz in the district of Fürstenfeldbruck was reached in 1934. It served as an air war school during World War II, surrendered to the U.S. troops in 1945 and was part of the subsequent airlift to Berlin. Since 1956, the air base was a training center of the German Air Force and (as mentioned above) one of the sites of the 1972 Olympic assassination. In 2006, flight operations on the site were discontinued and in 2020 the officers' school on the airport grounds is also scheduled to be closed.
About the 1972 Olympic assassination attempt:
On September the 5th, 1972 Palestinian assassins of the terrorist group "Black September" invaded the Olympic village in Munich, took the Israeli team hostage and, after long negotiations, fled with a helicopter to the air base in Fürstenfeldebruck. The situation escalated here and after a fire fight lasting about 40 minutes, all nine hostages and five of the eight terrorists, as well as a German policeman were dead.
