Starting in Garmisch, pass the Olympia Skisstadion (Olympic skiing stadium) with its futuristic ski jump, where the New Year’s ski jumping contest of the Four Hills Tournament takes place every January. Continue on towards the Partnachklamm gorge. Across idyllic mountain meadows and through dreamy villages you will arrive in Elmau. Even before you reach the mountain pastures of the Wettersteinalm you can hear the bells of the young cattle grazing here in the summer. Surrounded by meadows, the Alpine hut is located at an altitude of 1,464 m. You can stop for refreshments here and enjoy the view of the majestic towering rocks of the Wetterstein Mountains.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the station turn right and cross the taxi stand to Lagerhausstraße. This street leads into Gehfeldstraße. After ca. 200 m, the road forks. Ensure that you keep right. At the end of Kochelbergstraße cross the railway tracks and turn left. Stay alongside the tracks and turn right at the next junction. After 5 minutes you will cross a bridge. Turn right again and cycle upstream along the Partnach River towards the Partnachklamm gorge. Behind the wooden bridge in front of the gorge, a very steep path leads you uphill (30% – if it is too steep for you, just get off and walk your bike – the very steep part is rather short). After 4 switchbacks you will reach Vordergraseck. Here you should turn left and go to Hintergraseck, across a beautiful mountain meadow and through a gate at its end. Continue uphill, cycle past the turnoff to Eckbauer. Then, a short downhill part over a bridge and uphill again will take you to the parking site Elmau. From here follow the stream Elmauer Bach for 1 km. Then, a forest track, level at first and then turning steeper, takes you to an intersection, where you will turn left. After 100 m stay right and go towards Wettersteinalm. At the end, the path is quite bumpy until you reach a turnoff at a gate. There you should go left and arrive at Wettersteinalm after 5 more minutes. Take the same route for the way back down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Alternatively, you can cycle on the toll road from Elmau to Klais, past the castle Schloss Kranzbach and on the cycle path along the state road B2, to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
