A very nice ‘via ferrata’ within a beautiful and impressive landscape. It is well accessible by cable car.

From the mountain station of the Kreuzeckbahn you have access to a great Alpine landscape where both climbers and non-climbers will find the perfect tour. This is particularly true for the Alpspitze where you will find well-maintained via ferratas (a mountain route that is equipped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders and bridges).

Author’s recommendation

We recommend that you ask for advice from one of our mountain guides from the mountain guide office in the Tourist Information if you intend to climb via ferratas. Our guides escort you, show you the most beautiful places and always have a special tip for you.The Alpspitze particularly offers many interesting routes for you to safely discover - with a guide - even with children.

Safety information

Climb the via ferrata only if you have sufficient mountaineering experience and if you have equipment for fixed rope routes and a helmet. In early summer as well as in late fall, there might be snow! It is absolutely necessary to be surefooted, in a good physical condition and not afraid of heights.

Start

Top terminal of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car. (1,637 m)

Turn-by-turn directions

From the top terminal of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car (1,650 m), walk in the southwest direction to the Hochalm. Now, follow the broad hiking path - in wintertime this is a ski slope - uphill, until you pass the hut of the Mountain Rescue Service (Bergwacht). Continue on the hiking path. When the path splits, turn left and follow the signpost “Schöngänge". Here, the via ferrata through the Schöngänge starts. This via ferrata partly involves climbing and, in damp weather, the route partially tends to be slippery. When you have passed the steep rock face, the detour to the summit of the Bernadeinwand is worth the effort. When you have climbed out of the via ferrata, walk in the westward direction through the northern slope of the Alpspitze. You will now hike downward along the Nordwandsteig (track at the northern slope) and to the left of the cirque (follow the Alpine markings: red points). When you have reached the foot of the northern slope of Mount Alpspitze, the way will lead you directly to the top terminal of the Alpspitzbahn cable car.

Public transport

Take Deutsche Bahn (German Federal Railway) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (there is an hourly connection from München (Munich) and regular trains from and to Innsbruck and Reutte/Tirol). The station of the Zugspitzbahn is located directly behind the station of the Deutsche Bahn. The Zugspitzbahn leaves every hour - the timetable is co-ordinated with the timetable of the Deutsche Bahn - in the direction of Grainau. Get out at the Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn station.

Getting there

Take the motorway A95 in the direction of Garmisch. At the end of the motorway at Eschenlohe, continue on state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After the Farchanter tunnel, follow the signs to the Garmisch part of the town or Grainau/Zugspitze. When you are in Garmisch, continue in the direction of Grainau/Zugspitze.

If you are coming from Innsbruck/Mittenwald, follow the state road B2 to the intersection at the town hall in Partenkirchen. Turn left in the direction of Grainau/Zugspitze/Fernpass/Reutte and follow the course of the main road (Bahnhofstraße, St.-Martin-Straße). At the end of town, follow the signs Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn and turn left after the casern. This road leads you directly to the base terminals of the Kreuzeck- and Alpspitzbahn cable cars.

If you are coming via the state road B23 (from Ehrwald/Tirol or Grainau/Zugspitze) turn right at the traffic lights immediately after the town sign of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in front of the casern/Marshall-Center. Follow the signs to the Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn cable cars. This road directly leads you to the large parking area between the two base terminals.

Parking

Large parking area at the base terminals (P9)
