From the top terminal of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car the trail leads you over steep paths, through mountain forests and past the impressive rock faces of the Stuiben down into the Valley of the Rhine. Most hiking tours run on the other side of the valley. During this tour, you will very rarely see other hikers. Thus, you can freely enjoy the varied nature without being disturbed.

For a more detailed description of the tour, please refer to "PDF Print" above.

Author’s recommendation

If you do not know the Partnachklamm, we strongly recommend you to go on the detour through this wild and romantic gorge. There is the possibility to stop in the Bockhütte for refreshments or a meal (only attended during the months when the cattle are up there in the mountains) as well as in the Partnachalm, Kochelbergalm and Lenz'nhütte (shortly before the Olympia Skistadion), as well as Olympiahaus in the Skistadion for those who walk through the Partnachklamm. At the Skistadion, board local bus route 1 in order to return to your starting point.

Turn-by-turn directions

With the Kreuzeckbahn cable car you can reach Kreuzeck Mountain (1,651 m) where you can orientate yourself at the large information board with a hiking map. From the cable car station, follow the broad footpath in the direction of the Hochalm (signs will point you the way). After approx. 1 km, turn left onto a steep and narrow path down to the Stuibenalpe (please look out for the sign on the left hand side of the path so that you will not miss the turn). The steep path is well accessible and leads you through rocky terrain to Bernadein-Diensthütte (Service hut). The path continues into the forest and past the steep rock face of the Stuiben on the right hand side down to the Bockhütte Alpine hut in the Valley of the Rine (Reintal) at 1,072 m (attended as long as the cattle are up here). Walk downhill on the beautiful hiking path along the shores of the Partnach where you will reach a forest road after approx. 1.5 km. Walk along this road for another 1.5 km until this road parts. Both ways will lead to the Olympia-Skistadion (Olympic Skiing Stadium) in Partenkirchen. The right path runs directly along the Partnach and then through the Partnachklamm Gorge to the Olympia Skistadion.

The left path, which is the so-called “Hohe Weg" (high trail), leads you to the Partnachalm (Alpine hut). From here, it goes downhill again. Turn left after a few hundred metres onto the footpath to the Kochelbergalm. From there, it is only a short distance down to the valley.

Walk to the railway tracks and keep left until you reach the Hausberg station. Here, you can board the Zugspitzbahn and go back to the starting point.

Public transport

Take a train of the Deutsche Bahn (German Federal Railway) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (comfortable and regular connections). In the station, walk through the subway directly to the station of the Bayerischen Zugspitzbahn. Here you can purchase your ticket for the railway trip to the cable car and the ascent with the Kreuzeckbahn cable car. Matching the schedule of the Deutsche Bahn, the Zugspitzbahn goes to the Zugspitze every hour. Exit at the station Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn.

Getting there

Take the motorway A95 from Munich to its end at Eschenlohe, and then follow the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Behind the Farchanter tunnel drive in the direction of the Garmisch part of town and Grainau/Zugspitze. Go on through Garmisch and towards Grainau/Zugspitze.

From Innsbruck/Mittenwald, take the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Turn left at the intersection at the town hall in the direction of Grainau/Zugspitze/Fernpass/Reutte and follow the course of the main road (Bahnhofstraße, St.-Martin-Straße). Just before leaving the town, follow the signs to the Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn and turn left at the barracks. The street leads you directly to the base terminals of the Kreuzeck and Alpspitzbahn cable cars.

Coming from Ehrwald/Tirol or Grainau/Zugspitze via the state road B23, turn right just behind the place name sign and before the barracks/Marshall-Centre at the set of traffic lights. Follow the signs to Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn. The road leads you directly to the large parking area between the two base terminals.
