The Weilheimer Hütte (Alpine hut) is situated approx. 130 metres below the highest summit of the Ester Mountains, Mount Krottenkopf (2,086 m). This wonderful tour leads you past the idyllically located Esterbergalm (Alpine hut) and out of the valley up in the mountains to the saddle between Mount Krottenkopf and Mount Bischof, from where you can enjoy great views.

Author’s recommendation

Plan an overnight stay at Weilheimer Hütte. When the weather is fine, you will enjoy the sunrise over the summits of the Ester Mountains, which are a very special wonder of nature, the next morning. Alternatively, we recommend for you to descend via Michelsfeld to Wallgau in the Isartal (Valley of the Isar).

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts at the parking site of the Wankbahn cable car in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here, you can orientate yourself at the large information board with a hiking map. Now, follow the road past the rock climbing centre and the Daxkapelle (chapel) to Esterbergalm. The Esterbergalm is always worth stopping by, no matter whether you do so now during your ascent or on your way back. The path leads past Esterbergalm and further out of the valley up in the mountains. You will pass Farchanter Alm (the Alpine hut is also called Hintere Esterbergalm) and follow the path, which is, by the way, part of the VIA ALPINA (a trail leading over the Alps). Approx. 1 to 1.5 km after Farchanter Alm, turn right to the trail along the Finzbach stream. The signs “Krün/Finzbach” will point the way. Keep to the left and stay on VIA ALPINA and follow the signs to the Krottenkopf/Weilheimer Hütte. Now, the path will lead you uphill. Towards its end, it becomes quite steep, but when you have reached the saddle between Mount Bischof and Mount Krottenkopf, you will be rewarded with great views over the Valley of the Loisach and, at a distance, over the Ammer Mountains. It is not far now, just one descent and a quite short ascent and you will reach Weilheimer Hütte. If you feel like it, you can climb to the summit of Mount Krottenkopf. Turn left directly at the Weilheimer Hütte onto the steep 130 metres to the summit crucifix.

Public transport

Take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (connections from München (Munich) every hour, regular connections from Innsbruck and Reutte). Buses leave from the station forecourt. Routes 3, 4 and 5 will take you to the Wankbahn base terminal (the buses leave every 20 minutes).

Getting there

Take the motorway A95 in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At the end of the motorway, at Eschenlohe, take the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Follow the signs for the Partenkirchen part of town. Just after the sign for the town, turn left following the signposts for the Wankbahn cable car.

If you are coming from Mittenwald/Innsbruck, take the state road B2 through Partenkirchen in the direction of München (Munich). Just before the sign for the town, turn right following the signposts for the Wankbahn cable car.

If you are coming from Ehrwald/Reutte/Tirol on the state road B23, follow the signposts for the Partenkirchen part of town. At the intersection in front of the town hall take a left towards München (Munich). Just before leaving town, take a right following the signs for the Wankbahn cable car.
