This is the athletic way to reach the top of Mount Kreuzeck. This tour leads through shady forests and past historic sports facilities. In the early 20th century already, townsfolk were drawn to the Kreuzeck for their summer retreat. From here, you can not only enjoy the beautiful views but also go on many hikes in this interesting hiking area with its unique landscape - both in the summer and winter. Fit mountaineers start their hike at a high altitude when they have reached the top. The ones who prefer a relaxed hike can retreat in one of the larger or smaller Alpine huts. After having enjoyed something to eat or refreshments as well as the lovely fresh air up in the mountains, they can use the Kreuzeck cable car to go down to the valley.

Author’s recommendation

Mount Kreuzeck is the start of many hikes, such as over the Hupfleitenjoch to Mount Osterfelderkopf, the hike via Stuiben into the Rheintal (valley of the Rhine), to Mount Hausberg or extraordinarily beautiful hikes and snow shoe hikes in wintertime.

Our recommendation: Stay in the Kreuzjochhaus or Kreuzeckhaus (run by the German Alpine Club) Alpine huts for further hikes in this interesting hiking region.

Enjoy a meal or refreshments in the Aule-Alm, Kreuzalm or the DAV (German Alpine Club) Kreuzeckhaus.

Turn-by-turn directions

From your starting point, the parking area P9 that is located between the base terminals, starts in the direction of the Aule-Alm Alpine hut (shortly before the base terminal of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car, take the road to the left and follow the signs). From Aule-Alm, the way leads through a shady forest to the Riessersee (Lake Riesser). If you keep to the right here, you will reach the historic bobsleigh run. The small museum that is located in the former bobsleigh shed is worth visiting. There are free guided tours that are offered each Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm. Now, hike uphill through the former bobsleigh trail. When you reach its end, you will have reached the forestry road. Follow this road only a short distance until the footpath again leaves the forestry road on the left hand side. The path winds along, partially on the forestry road, partially as a footpath through the forest as it ascends steadily to the Tonihütte Alpine hut, which is also called Riesserkopfhütte. Here, you cross the garden of the Alpine hut (turning to the right in front of the hut). Now, follow the forestry road for a short distance until a path to the left leads you into the forest. Follow this forestry path, which will cross the forestry road two times, until you reach the Tröglhütte (this hut is not operated). Above the Tröglhütte, follow the signposts "Kreuzeck", which will lead you into the so-called “Hexenkessel” (witches’ cauldron) with the chair lift that is only operated in wintertime. Then, hike over the Kreuzalm (approx. 25 minutes) up the the Kreuzeckhaus Alpine hut, which is located directly at the summit of Mount Kreuzeck.

Public transport

Take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (connections from München (Munich) every hour, in which there are also regular connections from Innsbruck and Reutte/Tirol). Right behind the train station you will find the station of the Zugspitzbahn railway station. Matching the schedule of the Deutsche Bahn, the Zugspitzbahn goes to Grainau every hour. Exit at the station Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn.

Getting there

Take the motorway A95 from Munich to its end at Eschenlohe, and then follow the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Behind the Farchanter tunnel drive in the direction of the Garmisch part of town and Grainau/Zugspitze. Go on through Garmisch and towards Grainau/Zugspitze. At the end of the town, follow the signs to Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn and turn left after the barracks. This road will lead you to the base terminals of the Kreuzeck- and Alpspitzbahn cable cars.

From Innsbruck/Mittenwald, take the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Turn left at the intersection at the town hall in the direction of Grainau/Zugspitze/Fernpass/Reutte and follow the course of the main road (Bahnhofstraße, St.-Martin-Straße). Just before leaving town, follow the signs to the Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn and turn left at the barracks. The road leads you directly to the baser terminals of the Kreuzeck and Alpspitzbahn cable cars.

Coming from Ehrwald/Tirol or Grainau/Zugspitze on state road B23, turn right just behind the place name sign of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and before the barracks/Marshall-Centre at the set of traffic lights. Follow the signs to Kreuzeckbahn/Alpspitzbahn. The road leads you directly to the large parking area between the two base terminals.
