This walk is excellent with wonderful views of the town and the Wetterstein mountain range. Stretches of the route take you through thin mountain forest, which provides lots of shade in the summer. For families the nature trail and the castle ruins guarantee an eventful walk. And who knows, you might just find treasure buried in the ruins. This tour can be approached from both directions.

Author’s recommendation

Seize the opportunity and explore the ruins of Werdenfels castle, which said to be haunted by some ghosts. In this context also refer to the themed “Castle trail”. After your trip into the past we recommend a stop at the Alpine hut Werdenfelser Hütte.

Watch out! At the moment there is only very limited access to the castle trail.

Am Schneckensteg an der Allestraße

Turn-by-turn directions

The walk starts at Schneckensteg, a wooden bridge connecting Alleestrasse and Loisachstrasse. You will comfortably walk upstream through Alleestrasse along the river bank until you reach the Loisachbad leisure center. From the car park go along the river to Archstrasse, which takes you right to a wooden bridge over the river Loisach. Cross the bridge and walk back to the Ritter-von-Halt-Stadion leisure center along Maximilianstrasse on the other side of the river. Turn into Almhüttenweg on the opposite side. Follow this path to the Alpine hut Almhütte, which provides and opportunity to stop for refreshments or a meal, and then carry on across the fields to the edge of the forest. At the Kneipp center, turn right onto Kramerplateauweg. On the nature trail you can learn interesting facts about the forest, various plants and animals. After only a few meters you will see a small boggy pond, where water lilies blossom in late summer. Again and again you will cross small channels leading down from the mountain, crossing the path; in the spring these are full of melting water. Stay on Kramerplateauweg towards lake Pflegersee and cross the junction at the St. Martin mountain inn. At the junction “zum Schmölzersee” you turn right and walk leisurely to the seemingly mysterious lake Moorsee. Go along the lake on the road and after approximately 100 meters turn left and follow the little path along the shore of the lake. Half way round the lake, the path leads away from the lake into the forest. At the next junction follow the path straight on, which now takes you slightly downhill. After 50 meters you will walk straight towards a sign for the Werdenfels castle ruins “Ruine Werdenfels”. Stay on this path until you reach the junction and then turn left onto a path which takes you uphill to the Alpine hut Werdenfelser Hütte and then on to the castle ruins. Through the passage in the wall on the left side an the back of the castle you can get down to Burgrain, a part of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Down there you will see fields. Take a sharp right and walk along the edge of the forest towards the greenhouses. Through the driveway of a farmhouse you will get onto Burgstrasse, which you follow all the way to Grandhotel Sonnenbichl. Cross the street and continue a bit further down the street until you reach the large wooden bridge over the river Loisach on your left. Cross the river and walk along the embankment to Längenwangstrasse. Take one last right turn into Alleestrasse and walk to your starting point.

Public transport

Take the national train service to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (connections from Munich every hour, regular connections from Innsbruck and Reutte/Tirol).

From the station take the bus route 3 towards Burgrain of route 4 towards Farchant and get off at the Loisachbrücke stop.

Getting there

Take the motorway A95 from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At the end of the motorway near Eschenlohe, follow the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After the Farchant Tunnel follow the signs for the Garmisch part of town. Continue on the state road B2 to the bridge over the river Loisach. Turn right into Loisachstrasse before the bridge or turn right into Alleestrasse after the bridge.

Coming on the state road B2 from Innsbruck/Mittenwald carry on until you reach the intersection in front of the town hall in Partenkirchen. Cross this intersection and turn left from Hauptstrasse into Hindenburgstrasse. Turn left at the next traffic lights into Von-Brug-Strasse, which turns right into Parkstrasse after the railway underpass. Either cross the traffic lights for Alleestrasse or turn right, crossing the bridge over the river Loisach, and then immediately left into Loisachstrasse.

Coming from Ehrwald/Tirol or Grainau/Zugspitze on the state road B23 follow the B23 in the direction of Munich when you get into Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At the traffic lights in the center of town turn left before or after the bridge across the river Loisach into Alleestrasse or Loisachstrasse respectively.

LG Lothar
