This footpath is lined at one side by magnificent mountain forests that offer sufficient shade in the summer. On your right hand side you will see the town. Green meadows with a wide variety of flowers and hey barns all form the natural border to the hiking regions. When the meadows are mowed and the hey is made in the late summer and autumn, the scent of the freshly cut grass is really wonderful. Enjoy a traditional hearty Bavarian snack, the so-called “Brotzeit” on the terrace of the Hammersbacher Hütte, which is located between Hammersbach and rocks and some distance away from the street.

Author’s recommendation

We recommend you to return by the Zugspitzbahn rack railway from Hammersbach to your starting point. To reach the stop, walk along the little road that leads to the right directly in front of the entrance of the hotel. The rack railway leaves every hour in both directions.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the end of the parking area, next to the railway tracks of the Zugspitzbahn rack railway, there is a well-asphalted path that leads from the Olympia Skistadion (Olympic Skiing Stadium) to Hammersbach. Keep to the left and walk past the tennis courts in the direction of Mount Zugspitze. After Approx. 40 minutes, you will cross a street before the railway crossing. From now on, follow the footpath to the left that leads to Kreuzeckbahnstraße. After a short distance, the path leads to the right onto the footpath in the direction of Hammersbach. When you have reached Hammersbach, cross the railway crossing on your left hand side, in which the road will lead you directly through a residential area to Hotel Hammersbach.

Public transport

The German Rail runs regular train services to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (hourly connections from München (Munich), regular connections from Innsbruck and Reutte/Tirol). To reach the parking area of the Hausbergbahn cable car, wheelchair users are recommended to use the Bayerischen Zugspitzbahn rack railway from the Olympiastraße station to the Hausbergbahn.

Getting there

Take the motorway A95 from München (Munich) towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen to its end at Eschenlohe, continuing on the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After the Farchant tunnel follow signs to the Garmisch part of town. Continue along the B2 until you reach the Marienplatz (square) where you should turn left here towards the Hausbergbahn cable car.

When coming from Innsbruck/Mittenwald, take the state road B2 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen until you reach the town hall crossing in Partenkirchen, where you should turn left past the train station and drive through the underbridge and then turn left at the Alpspitzstraße intersection. Follow the signs to the Hausbergbahn cable car.

On the B23 (coming from Ehrwald/Tirol or Grainau/Zugspitze), turn right at the traffic light after the barracks/Marshall-Centre.  Follow the signs to the Hausbergbahn cable car.
