The Kleinwalsertal was settled around 1270 by Walsers, an ethnic group who immigrated from the upper Valais (Switzerland). The dialect is still quite well preserved and differs significantly from its neighbors in Vorarlberg and Allgäu.

With around 5,000 inhabitants, the valley is divided into 4 villages: Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad. The Kleinwalsertal extends over an area of 97 km². It is approx. 15 km long and approx. 6.5 km wide.
