In spring 2017, the playground builders from the Piolka company realised a new idea of playing at the square in Wilhelminian style and installed birdhouses in the plane of the existing treetops. These houses, which appear compact in their construction, were installed on long support structures at different heights. Varied and exciting paths connect the houses and create different destinations for the children.
Access is provided via several ramps, a bridge, a bird ladder and a high climbing wall. A long box slide and a slide bar offer rapid descent options. Below the birdhouses, the children will find rest areas to linger. The play areas created for the grown-ups and the little ones are not separated but installed right next to each other. For the small children, a spacious sand play area has been designed, where the focus is on working together and creating with their own hands. A small birdhouse of their own can be reached here via simple climbing and balancing routes and serves as the main attraction for little master builders. Installed sand troughs, a sand lift, baking tables as well as a sieve offer opportunities for material experience with play sand. Several platforms are connected via different climbing routes and integrate an existing tree into the play landscape. Finally, a small slide offers the pleasure of a rapid descent. The playground builders have used high-quality materials such as oak canthus, plastic panels or stainless steel. Coloured panels, window rings and panes of coloured light were integrated into the birdhouses. Birds turned from wood sit high up and watch the colourful goings-on in the playground. A nest swing is now also available in Görlitz Südstadt and will offer all children a special swinging pleasure. The wild donkey comes from the previous playground design and may seem a little nostalgic. But its special way of swinging, its effect on the body and the feeling it gives are unique.
