Author’s recommendation

Discovering the city from above is a great experience. Climb the town hall tower on Untermarkt during your tour, for example.

Turn-by-turn directions

Our tour starts at the Görlitz-Information at Obermarkt 32. With the booklet "6 spannende Stadtspiele im Obeerlausitzer Sechsstädtebund" you can walk along the different stations. Look at the route shown in the Görlitz section and solve the riddles at the stations!

The first stop is to the west at the end of Obermarkt at the Reichenbach Tower. Before anyone asks: it is 51 m high! The tower has several coats of arms on each side. How many coats of arms did you count? Opposite is the Kaisertrutz, which we can easily recognize by its round shape. In the past, the building was used to defend the city. What do you think is in the building today?

We now walk south in the direction of Demianiplatz. After about 200 m of walking, we can look directly at the imposing Görlitz Art Nouveau department store behind the bus stop. How many arches does the Görlitz department store have under which you can walk?

The tour continues across Marienplatz, and we can see the so called Frauenturm, which is also known as Dicker Turm (Thick Tower). Do you know the colour of the tower?

From here we pass to the east in the direction of Untermarkt. After about 500 m we reach the tower of the town hall. On the town hall tower, a golden animal guards the Untermarkt above the two clocks. Can you tell which animal it is?

Now we walk into Neissstraße. There you will find the Barockhaus museum in a yellow house with a magnificent portal and two golden door knockers. Which animal do you see here? Right next to it, a stone head looks out of the archway towards the town hall.  Who or what is looking out?

At the end of Neissstraße you will find the Old Town Bridge, which leads across the Neisse River. The Neisse River is the border between two countries. Do you know these two countries?

From here we walk uphill to the landmark of Görlitz. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is visible from afar. Find out how many steps there are up to the southern entrance with the semicircular staircase!

From St. Peter's Church, you walk along Peterstraße, Untermarkt and Brüderstraße back to Obermarkt. Directly in front of the Görlitz-Information on Obermarkt is the Heroldbrunnen with a statue. Do you see what the statue is holding in its hand?
