Destination

Bait dei Manzi

Turn-by-turn directions

Starting point: Mezzocorona (TN)

Ischia (Mezzocorona), 229 m - intersection 505A, 260 m - intersection 505A, 300 m - Giovanelli plaque, 420 m - valletta Rio Carbonare (end of ferrata), 650 m - Bait dei Manzi (intersection 506), 858 m

From Ischia (229 m, car park and information panels) a steep path climbs the mountain’s rocky foundations to the base of an overhanging wall before continuing inside the deep cleft. A more interesting alternative to this first part of the path is to take the “difficult variant” (260 m, 5 min to the start) signposted 505A, which takes you over an outcrop by means of a long ladder alongside a waterfall (20 min). You make your way up through a very picturesque environment with the aid of ropes, metal footholds and ladders, until, having passed a large waterfall and scrambled over several outcrops, you emerge from the gorge by a long ladder and enter the woods where a path leads to the Bait dei Manzi (intersection 506, 858 m, 2 ¼ hrs from the start, emergency shelter always open). A forest track (signposted 506) leads to Monte di Mezzocorona (intersection 500, 891 m, 40 min, return to Mezzocorona by cable car), while in the opposite direction the Strada delle Longhe takes you back down to the starting point.

Getting there

From the San Michele all'Adige-Mezzocorona exit from the A22 motorway follow the signs for Mezzocorona. Go past the Vender Legnami timber yard and take the first exit from the roundabout (signposted Mezzocorona) and go along Via Rotaliana. Go straight on at the next roundabout, go over the level crossing and continue to Piazza San Gottardo. Then take Via Fratelli Grandi (last exit from the roundabout, Hotel Drago on the left) and go straight on until you are out of the town. Above you to your right in a cleft in the rock you’ll be able to see the picturesque Castel San Gottardo. Go past the electricity power station and immediately after the white house and before the bend turn right (signposted Burrone Giovanelli) and follow the narrow asphalt road through the fields getting gradually closer to the mountain. Park near the start of the Burrone Giovanelli Via Ferrata (Ischia, 2.4 km from Piazza San Gottardo).

Parking

At Ischia near the start of the Burrone Giovanelli SAT footpath 505 (picnic tables and information panels) or further on, on the right, in the Lake Ischia car park.
