The Salzburg Almenweg is a long-distance hike through the Pongauer mountain world. This hiking path is under the motto "From hut to hut on the trail of the gentian. The 15th stage from Hüttschlag to the Draugsteinalmen bears the name: "Scenic experiences high above the Tappenkarsee".

Starting point of the tour is the village center in Hüttschlag. Depending on the accommodation of the night, take one of the two streets towards the end of the valley. In Wolfau there is the Wolfau chapel. A short detour to the chapel and the waterfall behind it is definitely worth it. You hike along the road to the distric Karteis. Also here is a beautiful chapel, which is a place to stop for a moment. A nice hiking path leads to the Hallmoosalm (closed).

After a short distance on the forestry road you turn off and follow the path to the Karteisalm (closed). A little in front of this mountain hut you pass an idyllic spring - the water in our valley has drinking water quality everywhere.

Via alpine pastures (especially beautiful in the early summer, when the alpine pastures bloom) you hike to the Karteistörl. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view to the Tappenkarsee, the largest mountain lake in the Alps.

In front of you the  mighty Draugstein, one of three limestone mountains in Grossarltal, behind one the Hohen Tauern. What do you want more?

Descent to Tappenkarseehütte. This Alpine Club hut is located directly on Lake Tappenkar. Here, in addition to products from the company's own production, warm delights such as Kaiserschmarrn or Heidelbeerschmarrn tempt you.

You hike along the Lake Tappenkar to the Tappenkarseealm, then ascent to the Draugsteintörl and descent to the Draugsteinalmen. Here, the flora and fauna is particularly beautiful, because in this area, because of the limestone, there are many species of flowers that are otherwise rare in the valley.

Two mountain huts await you at the Draugsteinalm. On both you get delicacies from the own production (cheese, butter, bread, bacon, sausage, liquor).

Accommodation possibilities: Tappenkarseehütte, Draugsteinalm-Steinmannhütte, Draugsteinalm-Schrambachhütte

Author’s recommendation

In addition to snacks, there are also warm delicacies at the Tappenkarseehütte. Very popular are the Kaiser- and Heidelbeerschmarrn.

This mountain hut also provides facilities for about 70 people to stay overnight. Sunrises and sunsets are particularly beautiful at Lake Tappenkar.
