Only a few meters from the open-air stage in Elspe there is an excellent example of a rare calcareous semi-dry grassland interspersed with Junipers. This habitat owes its existence to centuries of overexploitation of the calcareous beechwoods that were originally native here. Especially in the summer months, the area delights numerous nature enthusiasts with its profusion of flowers. From May to July many orchid species can be admired without leaving the path. The profusion of flowers attracts a diverse butterfly and moth fauna. Among the most unusual species are the rare Five-Spot Burnet moth Thermophila meliloti and the Six-Spot Burnet, which is also popularly known as blood droplets.

Tips, hints and links

Of course, during the summer months a visit to the Karl-May-Festspiele suggests itself.

A few kilometres south of the Rübenkamp the village of Lennestadt-Meggen was the location of Europe’s largest barite mine in the 1970s. The mining museum Sicilia-Schacht has excellent exhibits relating to this bygone industry.

Right next to the museum are the "Sauerland Pyramids", where temporary exhibitions on natural history subjects frequently take place.
