Opposite the Evangelical church to the north of Maloja, a road leads to Hof Pila, and after crossing the brook heads up the mountain ridge with a few sharp twists and turns. This visually rewarding, gently inclining trail takes you through meadows and wetlands with an incredibly rich flora – including numerous orchids – to the first settlement, Blaunca. A great deal of renovation and extension work has been carried out here in recent years. A road leads up from Plaun da Lej through Grevasalvas.

Following this road downward, we soon arrive at the houses of Grevasalvas. Like Fex, Curtins and Isola on the right side of the valley, Blaunca, Buaira and Grevasalvas are summer residences of the Bergell farmers. After Grevasalvas, the path gains several dozen metres in altitude and then slopes downward gradually through a light larch forest along Silsersee lake to Sils.

Detours:
a) Above Pila to Lägh dal Lunghin; 1 hr 30 mins.
b) In Grevasalvas through Nuaira–Splüga to Maloja; 1 hr.

Tips, hints and links

Bergell Summer Settlement: As Bergell itself has little useable ground, the farmers have always had to use the neighbouring valleys – Avers and Oberhalbstein as well as Oberengadin. The result was a kind of Alpine nomadism: in autumn, winter and spring, the farmers would stay in Bergell, and in summer on the Maiensäss, shifting their belongings up the mountain and then back down again once a year. Today, however, many crops are no longer cultivated; the buildings are often just used as weekend and holiday homes. Grevasalvas was once also the backdrop for a Swiss film about Heidi.
