A circular hike starting from Halbenrain leads us through the second largest, closed floodplain forest area in Austria and convinces with beautiful resting places, self-service stations and the possibility to strengthen our connection to nature through recommended nature resonance exercises. The total length of the well-signposted themed trail "K13 Murauen Weg" is 13 kilometers, and you can shorten it via three marked variants, depending on your time, desire and mood. Routes A (5 km) and B (8.5 km) are additionally suitable for strollers and thus attractive for families. Suggestions for movement and breathing exercises are made on 13 trail stages along the entire route. The recommended nature resonance exercises, which address the bond between man and nature, are clearly presented in the folder "K13 Murauen Weg" and invite you to join in. The folder, which is available at the starting point or the Gasthof Wagner in Halbenrain, serves as an orientation aid and as a basis for the exercises.

Author’s recommendation

In the summer months, it is recommended to get up early and take advantage of the calm morning atmosphere for the exercises.

Turn-by-turn directions

The start is at the train station or parking lot in Halbenrain (1), 223 m. First we walk parallel to the tracks, further across fields, until we reach a wayside shrine and shortly after a lovingly designed rest area (2), 214 m, by the stream. After leaving the forest, we walk along the gravel road, on an embankment, until we reach the shortcut option A (3), 214 m. The main trail continues to the right. We continue on cart tracks across farmland and in the distance we see the Oberradkersburg Castle. We walk a short distance along an asphalt road. Before entering the floodplain forest, there is a possibility to take the shortcut B (4), 213 m. At this shortcut possibility we keep to the right and hike through the floodplain forest downstream. At a former hunting lodge (5), 214 m, which is now a rest area with a self-service station, we take a leisurely break. Here there is still the possibility of shortcut C. We pass directly to the right at the hut and stroll leisurely on through the floodplain forest. The way back leads over the Murdamm in the direction of Dietzen, and here we have a view of the Stradner Kogel, the Königsberg and the Klöchberg. In Dietzen (6), 212 m, we pass by the refreshment stop Bettina's Stüberl and the self-service station Bäcksteffl. Continue along the asphalt road in the direction of Halbenrain, turning right shortly after the town sign, passing the tennis court and continuing to the herb garden (7), 218 m, and Halbenrain Castle. If you choose the variant via the castle, you have to keep to the right at the exit and after a short time you will see the marking on the ground again. It is not far to the train station. We go through the populated area and shortly reach the starting point of the hike.

Equipment

Proper backpack packing makes many things easier: Pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within reach in a side pocket. All the things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every rucksack and it is always advisable to dress in layers.
