On this circular hike we get to know parts of the Besinnungsweg (approx. 6 km long) and the Fladnitz Rundweg (approx. 6.3 km long). By combining the two trails, a leisurely half-day hike can be taken, hiking through the small villages with the surrounding cultivated areas. The view during the tour reaches from the Riegersburg to the Kor- and Gleinalm and the local mountain of Graz, the Schöckl. The well-known contemplation path has its starting and end point at the pilgrimage church Eichkögl, also called Klein Mariazell. According to history, a woman from Eichkögl placed a votive image of Mariazell on a birch tree. 25 years later, a woman had a chapel built here, symbolizing her gratitude for the recovery after a serious illness of her husband Anton Kobald. Inspired by the story, year after year pilgrims sought out this special place and the chapel, so the Kobald couple had a church built, which was consecrated in 1890 and is known as a pilgrimage church far beyond the borders.

Turn-by-turn directions

We start at the Studenzen - Fladnitz train station and orient ourselves by the hiking overview board. From the station building we head towards the road and then to the right, along the sidewalk parallel to the road, over the tracks until we see the yellow signposts with the inscription "In the footsteps of volcanoes - Eichkögl Reflection Trail" in a long left-hand bend. Here we keep to the left and continue to follow the road. In a crossing area we see a wayside shrine and right next to it an information board about the path of contemplation. The trail continues along the road for about 600 m until we turn left into a side road and walk slightly uphill past meadows and fields. At a crossroads we turn right and soon cross the Erbersdorfer Bach stream. We hike on a forest road slightly uphill and see in the distance the parish and pilgrimage church Klein Mariazell. It goes continuously uphill over meadows and forest areas, past the cemetery, until we reach the pilgrimage church of Klein Mariazell. Continue along the road through the populated area of Eichkögl for about 1 km until we turn left into a side road. From the church we orientate ourselves by the yellow rectangular sign "On the tracks of the volcanoes". The trail continues comfortably until we reach Poitschen. At the next crossing we turn left and follow the signs "Rundweg Fladnitz". We pass by the Poitschen end-of-town sign and hike along the road in gentle ups and downs over the softly shaped ridge landscape. The hiking trail continues to the right, away from the road, on a pleasant meadow path at the edge of the forest. Arriving again at an asphalt road, we see a wooden sculpture in the shape of a man with a pipe. The trail continues on the asphalt road for the next 1.6 km. At the end of the descent, the hiking trail branches off the road to the left and leads directly to a farm or the village museum Fladnitz im Raabtal. After a few meters we reach the main road (B68), and continue to the right. We walk along the road for about 300 m until the hiking trail continues to the right in a side street. After a short time we come to the railroad crossing and immediately after to our starting point.
