The tour takes us from Blumenberg Veitsch in the heart of Hochsteiermark to Neuberg an der Mürz, the center of the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park. At the beginning the tour goes uphill to the summit of the Veitsch, where a breathtaking view of the mountain world with Gesäuse, Hochschwab, Rax and Fischbacher Alps is offered, the tour then leads downhill throughout, right into the middle of the nature park romantically situated in the middle of these mountain massifs in the north of Styria with its Neuberger Münster, which characterizes the entire region.

The Neuberg Minster at the end of the stage is a former Cistercian monastery. The monastery was founded in 1327 by the Habsburg Duke "Otto the Merry" on the occasion of the birth of his son Frederick. The imposing collegiate church is an impressive building not only for connoisseurs of art and culture. This earliest uniform hall complex within Austrian Gothic architecture bears the largest church wood roof truss in Austria. The cloister with the pictures of 38 abbots is worth seeing as well as the Renaissance high altar and the chapter house with the founder's crypt. The remains of Duke Otto the Merry and his family are buried here. In one part of the imposing complex there is also the Kaiserhof Glass Manufactory, where beautiful and precious glass articles are produced all year round. In this show glass blowing workshop it is possible to witness and try for oneself the production of glass articles from the molten glass.

We also move here on a stage of the circular tour BergZeitReise, which leads through the wildly romantic mountain landscape of Hochsteiermark.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Graf Meran Haus (Tel. +43 664 1513220) we first walk uphill to reach the summit of the Veitsch. Not only the magnificent panorama greets us here, but also the floral splendor of the mountain massif impresses. We keep to the right and branch off in an easterly direction to descend on the 01 trail to the Klein-Veitschalm hut (Tel. +43 3856 2980 or +43 664 1513220). In general, this stage of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" leads us downhill throughout, although this should not be underestimated in terms of fitness.

Continuing to follow the 01 trail, we pass through shady forests and in between beautiful views of the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park ahead of us to the Karoluskreuz, a crossroads with the 468 trail, which connects the villages of Veitsch and Mürzsteg. About 1.5 km later we reach the next prominent crossroads, the Veitschbachtörl, where we keep straight on to descend to Neuberg an der Mürz, the center of the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park (Tourist Information Tel. +43 3857 8321). In this romantic village in the midst of the mountains of Veitsch, Schneealm and Rax we are greeted by the Neuberg Minster with its monastery and the Nature Museum, which we should definitely take time to visit before the stage to the Schneealm awaits us the next day.

Equipment

Proper backpack packing makes many things easier: Pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within reach in a side pocket. All the things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every rucksack and it is always advisable to dress in layers.
