Winter Walking in Untertal
A scenic, easy winter hiking trail that takes your breath away along sections of the Wilde Wasser theme trail with several places to stop for refreshments.
The winter hiking trail in the Untertal follows parts of the Wilde Wasser summer theme trail. There are entry points at Hinkerbrücke, at Gasthof Tetter, at the lookout tower on Tettermoor, at Waldhäuslalm, near Sondlalm and at Gasthaus Weiße Wand. The path partly runs directly along the Untertalbach, where the hoar frost crystals glitter in competition with the snow crystals on the moor meadows of the Untertal. The inns along the route serve regional dishes, some with products from their own farm.
Please avoid entering the nearby cross-country skiing trails on foot. These are groomed for cross-country skiers and unfortunately footprints in the trail make cross-country skiing considerably more difficult.

Safety information
Changes in weather patterns, quick falls in temperature, thunderstorms, wind, fog and snow are some of the dangers that can be encountered on a hiking tour. Hosts of alpine huts and mountain refuges have a lot of experience in the mountains and can give good advice about weather and the trails. Poor equipment, overestimation of one's own capabilities, carelessness, poor personal constitution and/or wrong judgement can lead to critical situations. In case of thunderstorms: avoid summits, ridges and steel ropes.
GPS data and orienteering
Available GPS data - just like hiking maps - is only a guidance for orientation and can never depict a trail exactly with all its details. Especially at dangerous spots it is essential to judge on site how to proceed.
In an emergency please call:
- 140 - for Alpine emergencies (all over Austria)
- 112 - European GSM emergency number

Turn-by-turn directions
From Gasthof Tetter, follow the yellow summer signs into the valley along the Wilde Wasser theme trail. The accompanying path of the Untertalstraße is prepared for pedestrians by the grooming machine. After just a few meters you will reach the first highlight - the Tettermoor vantage point. Here you have a wonderful view over the wintry, snow-covered moor. Further into the valley, it goes past the lookout tower through the forest to the Waldhäuslalm (TIP: you can try Alpine Curling here). Further into the valley you hike along the road, past the forester's lodge and again and again right next to the stream, until you finally reach the Weiße Wand inn.
Here you turn around and after about 200 m out of the valley you branch off to the left over the bridge to the Sondlalm. You hike along the cleared path to the Sondlalm and from there further out of the valley until you reach the road again at the Waldhäuslalm. The way back to the starting point is known.
As an alternative to starting at the Gasthof Tetter, you can also start at one of the other restaurants, or even start from the Hinkerbrücke into the winter wonderland in the Untertal.
