A great tour with many heights and alpine pastures, with fantastic views and rest stops. Border crossings without passport control - half Upper Austria, half Styria.

The most important stops: from Altaussee to the Blaa Alm, to the Rettenbachalm, further to the Grabenbachalm and to the Hütteneckalm - the highest point (1,240 meters). Down to the Halleralm, then to the Michlhallbach (archaeological excavations), to the Waldgraben and the Pflindsberg ruin.

Author’s recommendation

A short detour to the Pflindsberg ruin is worthwhile.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Altaussee municipal office, drive back in the direction of Bad Aussee and take the first turnoff to the right to the toll booth of the Loser Panoramastraße. Once there, take the gravel road to the well-known and beautifully situated Blaa Alm, past the high ropes climbing park "omunduntn". When you arrive at the Blaa Alm, first turn right and then immediately left down into the Rettenbach valley (attention: steep section with coarse gravel), downstream you come to the tunnel (a lamp may be necessary) and out onto the Rettenbachalm.

After about 2.3 kilometers, take a sharp left and cross a bridge towards Grabenbach. Now the trail climbs steadily above the Grabenbach to a right-hand bend, past the Grabenbachhütte and, after a short flat section, up to the left to the Hütteneckalm. Here the forest road ends and the trail leads across the alpine pasture to the Hütteneck hut. From the hut the trail leads steeply down to a forest road. Here, all turnoffs are ignored until you come to a larger open area. After that, take the asphalt road to a wooded area and watch out for the turnoff to the left that leads to the Halleralm.

Passing above the Halleralm, later a forest road from the valley joins our road. Continue straight on until the end of the road. Now you have to go off-road: a narrow path on the right leads down to the Michlhallbach, which you cross on a narrow footbridge. You will come to a forest road again, where on the left there is an archaeological site - finds from the Roman period.

Continue straight on to the end of the road and take the dirt road down to the forest ditch (former Sarsteinblick inn). Continue straight on to the crossroads of the forest roads, then turn half-left across a moorland area to the fork in the path that leads to the Pflindsberg castle ruins (from there there is a magnificent view over the Ausseerland region) and down to Rambühel. From there the trail continues, again on asphalt, down to Altaussee. At the former inn Scheichlmühle, the path passes to the left again towards the lake and back to the starting point.
