The small Buchstein with 1990m is in no way inferior to its big brother in the Gesäuse. Yes, in order to reach its summit, even climbing experience is necessary.

Lonely hike with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains through the Mühlbach valley up to the Sparerriegel, difficult climbing in the summit area and descent from the Sparerriegel to the Eisenzieher

Parking Mühlbach 645m - always along the path along the Mühlbach up - Otterriegel waypoint 1.485m - Sparerriegel waypoint 1.790m - Kleiner Buchstein 1990m

The path is well marked until the entrance to the summit wall. On the climbing route red colored dots help you to choose the right way.

On the descent, take the same path to the Sparerriegel, then go down to the left towards the Eisenzieher!

Author’s recommendation

Crossing as described invites you to stop at the Fischerhäusl!

A 2 car for shuttle service would be advantageous

Safety information

Absolute surefootedness and complete freedom from vertigo are absolutely necessary.

Climbing experience is useful, climbing passages in 2 SG must also be mastered in the descent.

For inexperienced climbers we recommend to go with a mountain guide!

Mountain rescue emergency call: 140

Tip for emergency message - give answers to the six W questions: What happened? How many injured? Where did the accident happen (possibly GPS coordinates)? Who reports (callback number)? When did the accident happen? Weather at the scene of the accident?
