The Sattelberg in Ramsau am Dachstein is THE mountain for children. The first nature and adventure trail in Austria is great for children, parents and grandparents. The Zwergerl-Bauernhof next to Sattelberghütte (with information and game boards especially for small children) is a fantastic place for children to play.

As well as its large playhouse and the Kleine Ramasuer Wasserwelt (the Small Ramsau Waterworld), the Österreichisches Wandergütesiegel (Austrian hiking seal of quality) nature and adventure trail also offers three via ferrata for children and young people. Part of the trail is also suitable for prams.

The starting point of the nature and adventure trail is at the foot of the Sattelberg, around 150m from Concordia guesthouse. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Ramsau Kulm to the starting point of the circular three-hour trail. From station 1 to 3, the trail leads through hilly and flat forests. It then heads up Sattelberg to a flat area between stations 5 and 6, which is perfect for resting in before the hike up to station 7, the Sattelberggipfel.

Walking time: approx. 70 minutes

At the top, you can see the path winding through the forest to station 11. The trail continues along the edge of the forest, through clearings and high grass to the final station, number 14.

Author’s recommendation

In the vacation periods of July and August, the Kali Express train takes you from the Sattelberg hut back to the starting point of the hike or to the Old Mill. There is also the starting point for the children's via ferrata Kali and the young climbers' via ferrata Kala and Kalo.

Turn-by-turn directions

We start at the starting point of the environment and adventure trail. It is located at the foot of the Sattelberg, about 150 m east of the Pension Concordia and can be reached from Ramsau Kulm in about 20 minutes on foot. The circular trail leads you in about 3 hours over the Sattelberg summit.

From station 1 to 3 you alternate between hilly and flat forest terrain with several clearings. From station 3 you hike uphill, along the upper part of the northern flank of the Sattelberg. But don't worry, via station 5 to 6 you can regain your strength in the flat terrain to be fit for the ascent to number 7, the Sattelberg summit. In no more than 70 minutes of walking time, you'll mash your way up to here along a trail full of views and experiences, past berries, flowers, bizzare rock towers and much more.

At the top you can already see the serpentine path that winds through the forest to station 11. From there, the trail continues along the edge of the forest over tree roots, clearings and tall grass to Station 14. Slightly ascending forest terrain and a flat run-out finally end KALI's exciting circular trail.
