The Archduke had his chamber painters Jakob Alt, Jakob Gauermann and Matthäus Loder capture the beauty of this landscape and striking events during his multiple stays in many watercolors and drawings. These artists were followed by countless others in the following decades up to the present day: Not only painters and sculptors, musicians and composers, but above all poets and writers, but also scientists and scholars.

On the VIA ARTIS (Artists' Paths in Ausseerland) you can follow in the footsteps of some of the artists who, like many others, have made Ausseerland their summer retreat or even their adopted home. Like pearls, the three self-contained artists' paths - the Via Artis Bad Aussee, the Via Artis Altaussee and the Via Artis Grundlsee - are strung together with scenic beauty and memories of the cultural past to form a harmonious whole.

Hans Neuenfels, director

The residences of the artists can only be observed from the outside. The buildings and grounds are private property and therefore not accessible.

Equipment

Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
