This hike takes you from Pichl to the almost mystical "Strubschlucht" canyon at the estuary of Preuneggtal valley into Ennstal valley. The picturesque creek and the small pools at "Strub" canyon are worth to be discovered. Moreover, there are several restaurants along the tour.

Safety information

Changes in weather patterns, quick falls in temperature, thunderstorms, wind, fog and snow are some of the dangers that can be encountered on a hiking tour. Hosts of alpine huts and mountain refuges have a lot of experience in the mountains and can give good advice about weather and the trails. Poor equipment, overestimation of one's own capabilities, carelessness, poor personal constitution and/or wrong judgement  can lead to critical situations. In case of thunderstorms: avoid summits, ridges and steel ropes.

GPS data and orienteering

Available GPS data - just like hiking maps - is only a guidance for orientation and can never depict a trail exactly with all its details. Especially at dangerous spots it is essential to judge on site how to proceed.

In an emergency please call:

  • 140 - for Alpine emergencies (all over Austria)
  • 112 - European GSM emergency number

Turn-by-turn directions

From the trail head at the swimming lake in Pichl you head East to the bridge over the river Enns. Cross over, pass by Café Hermann and continue straight on towards Preuneggtal/Reiteralm. At the corner at Weitgasserhof farm turn off left and follow trail n° 63/772 to the mouth of "Strubschlucht" canyon.

Here, turn off right and start ascending trail n° 772 towards Reiteralm. The nice forest trail brings you up to Gasthof Bankwirt inn, including two shorter sections along Preuneggstraße road. Walk past the inn and the valley terminal of Reiteralm cable-car "Preunegg-Jet". Just 100 m beyond the terminal make a left onto trail n° 100 towards "Strub" canyon. After a short descent you reach the narrow gorge with its beautiful ponds along the creek.

After crossing over the bridge the trail ascends sligthly on the other side of the canyon and takes you to the "Pointner" farm after which you make a left onto trail n° 63 and start your descent on a meadow trail (a ski route in winter). The trail brings you back to the mouth of "Strub" canyon where you make a right and walk back to Weitgasserhof, and finally to your initial starting point at the swimming lake in Pichl.

Equipment

A well-packed backpack is helpful and especially when touring Alpine terrain a tuque, gloves, a windproof jacket and pants are standard equipment. Good, waterproof shoes, sun glasses, sun cream and sufficient beverages are essential too. Torch light, a map of the area, knie and a small first-aid kit should also be in the backpack.
