The Vinschger Sonnenberg with its unique, Mediterranean-style flora also impresses here with fantastic views into the Martell Valley to the Ortler massif and over the central Vinschgau Valley. The hike should not be done on very hot summer days. The small pilgrimage church St. Martin is worth seeing.

Turn-by-turn directions

This high-altitude hike runs along a section of the new Vinschger Höhenweg and starts in the mountain village of St. Martin im Kofel at 1,700 m in the municipality of Latsch, about 10 km from Naturno. The valley station of the cable car to St. Martin can be reached with the Vinschgerbahn (station approx. 10 minutes walk away). From the top station you first walk along the asphalted Höfestraße, in sections slightly downhill, then uphill again past the Gasthof Egg to the Hof Forra. There the path no. 14 in the direction of Schlanders. From here, the trail runs through the typical steppe vegetation and the sparse forests of the Vinschger Sonnenberg. On the way you cross several small streams, pass the dilapidated farms "Laggar" and "Zuckbichl", pass the Fallerbach and reach the forest road at the likewise abandoned farm Patsch. A little after the farm on the left the hiking trail nr. 14/11 and, lined with bushes, runs downhill through coniferous and mixed woodland towards Silandro (path no. 14). Arrived at the entrance of the Schlandrauntal gorge, you pass a large meadow and cross the wooden bridge over the Schlandraunbach. Then you go downhill on a hiking trail towards the centre of the village. Arriving at the hospital church near the hospital in the centre of Silandro, you can take the train (city bus to the station - hospital stop) back to Naturns.
