The Eidechsspitze in the Pfunderertal valley is one of the most popular peaks among South Tyroleans: at first moderately difficult, then high alpine, the trail winds through meadows and forests and later exposed to the summit. From Terenten we climb along a rushing mountain stream to the cosy Tiefrastenhütte, then on to the idyllically situated Kompfoßsee and up to the Eidechsspitze via beautiful but challenging mountain trails.

Eidechsspitze

Turn-by-turn directions

The starting point of the mountain tour is the car park in the Winnebach Valley near Terenten. You get there via the Pustertaler Sonnenstraße from Vintl. We first hike into the valley to the north and, after crossing the stream continue towards the Astnerbergalm. Always on the left side of the stream, we hike until above the valley station of a material cable car, where we come to a fork in the trail.

To get to the Eidechsspitze, we choose trail no. 23 to the Tiefrastenhütte and stride through a larch forest and to the beginning of the pastures of the Huberalm. There, a narrow mountain path branches off to the left at a red arrow marking to the Tiefrastenhütte. On the path, we go steeply upwards next to a thundering waterfall and cross the wide basin towards the west below the Kempspitze. Keeping to the right and over a partial step, we bypass a small valley and hike uphill to the Tiefrastenhütte. After a short break, continue in a north-westerly direction and up to the mountain station of the material cable car.

On trail no. 22 we hike over a broad ridge and then diagonally through a boulder field to the beautifully situated Kompfoßsee. North of the lake, we climb uphill on trail no. 22 to the Eidechsspitze. The trail first goes slightly up and down over a broad ridge, then crossing a steep flank to the summit. The last few metres are easy on serpentines to the summit cross. For the way back, we recommend the same route as for the ascent.
