Turn-by-turn directions

Start at the Hallerhof or Riedlerhof hikers’ car parks. Trail no. 3 leads at first steeply uphill to the Tengler tavern (closed in winter) and continues through a forest covered in deep snow to a clearing (crossroads). From here, continue through the forest of mountain pine and later across open terrain via the normal ascent to the Sarner Scharten-Biwak. The final ascent to the bivouac is a very steep slope (caution, avalanche danger!) Here you are met with indescribable panoramic views of Geisler, Schlern, Langkofel, Plattkofel, Rosengarten, Latemar and Marmolata mountains. Then head moderately downhill across a long plateau and via the Schönbergalm Alpine farm to the Gasteiger Sattle saddle. An easy ascent over the Sattelberg mountain brings you to the Rittner Horn viewpoint (closed in winter, nearby ski bar usually open).

Descend via an open high plateau to the Unterhornhaus inn (restaurant/rooms). Continue down along the ski slope across sloping meadows and small sections of forest to Tre Sentieri/Pemmern. From here, take the public bus and cable car to Bolzano/Bozen or a taxi back into the Sarntal valley.
