In 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to their geological history, a trekking route was built which goes through these marvellous mountains, making travellers aware of this fascinating succession of events.
The Dolomites UNESCO Geotrail consists of 10 daily stages, focussing particularly on the Dolomites’ geological history.

Turn-by-turn directions
Opposite the Hotel Valparol-Eisenöfen in Armentarola the way ahead is signposted (Capanna Alpina – Path no. 11). Proceed under the road, cross the riverbed by the bridge and shortly afterwards cross the main road. Follow the signs for Capanna Alpina (Path no. 11) and climb up on the true left side of the stream until you join the gravel road just below the hut. Pass the Capanna Alpina (several signposts) and head for the Col de Locia (signposted Path no. 11). Very steep in parts, the trail leads up through the mountain pines. The upper part features well-made steps with handholds and some fixed ropes before we reach the Col de Locia. Follow the signs for Gran Fanes, keeping to Path no. 11, and head slightly uphill to the Tadegajoch. Crossing the pastures without any great effort you reach the Gran-Fanes-Alm. At the fork shortly after the Alm take a left (Path no. 11). A short climb leads over the old military road up to the Limosee lake, then on to the Limo Pass (GEOSTOP O), followed by the descent to the Fanes Hut. We pass the hut and, in part on the dirt road and in part on a trail, we descend to Pederü.
