Turn-by-turn directions
The Stelvio Marathon starts in Prad am Stilfserjoch and leads along an asphalt path through the tranquil village of Agums with its church of St. George. The route continues to Lichtenberg, where the view of the castle ruins of the same name awaits the runner. At the end of the village, the route alternates between asphalt and gravel sections and leads over slightly undulating terrain to the medieval town of Glurns. Through the town centre and along the imposing town walls, the route now follows the Via Claudia Augusta Adige cycle path to the Prader fish ponds. Once here, the runner's first view is of the impressive ice and rock formations around the Stelvio Pass.
Once again, the runner encounters the impressive ice and rock formations around the Stelvio Pass.
Once again we encounter the village of Prad, situated at the foot of the Stilfserjoch National Park. Here, after about 16 km, the actual ascent to the Stilfserjoch begins. First moderately steep over the Mitter- and Patzleidhof, we reach the quaint mountain village of Stilfs, known for the steepness of its alleys, via a path that is flat at the beginning and then rises steeply. These also lead us to the end of the village in the direction of Platzhof, not far from the picturesque little church of St. Martin. Already here, the runner has a first unobstructed view of King Ortler with his companions.
The course of the trail from Platzhof takes us alternately along narrow forest paths and wide gravel paths and ensures a constant change of rhythm. On this section, the runner may also catch a glimpse of some wild animals cavorting in the Fragges wildlife enclosure or even in the wild. Soon we come to a long ridge on the slopes of which are the Prader Alm and the mountain station of the Trafoier chairlift, the Furkelhütte. From here the route changes to a high-alpine hiking trail, the Goldseeweg.
From now on, the view of the Ortler group is the runner's constant companion. After a longer stay on the narrow mountain path, the route leads downhill for about 300 hm above the Obere Tartscher Alm to hairpin bend no. 25 of the legendary Stilfserjochstraße. From here the view to the finish is clear and the runner begins to spiral up the remaining 24 hairpin bends, past the Franzenshöhe mountain inn, to 2,757 m.
