This short walk will take you through one of the most interesting places of Val Algone: a small fortress tucked-away in the woods that covers the craggy left side of the valley.

Turn-by-turn directions

Drive from Stenico along the regional road towards Ragoli. It’s worth stopping along the road to admire the Rio Bianco waterfalls. Continuing towards Ragoli, you will come to a bridge, ponte del Lisàn; at the intersection to Val d’Algone, turn right and continue on this road that runs along the bottom of the valley for about 2 kilometres until you reach the crossing with the forest road that sets off on your right. Park in the area near the intersection and start walking up the wide dirt track that climbs through the woods. After passing three bends, you will reach a grassy field where, on the north-west side, you will see the Credata Fort, built in 1866 by Giovanni Battista Sicheri of Stenico, one of the Garibaldini (Hunters of the Alps) while waiting - although in vain - for a new military march over Trento after the battle of Bezzacca. After a visit to the fort, return to Stenico along the same route.

Getting there

From Ponte Arche/Comano terme follow the signs to Stenico (3,5 km), then continue in the direction of Ragoli. At bridge Lisàn you will come to a crossing; take the road leading to Val d'Algone, turn right and keep driving on the valley road for about 2 km.

Equipment

There is nowhere to stop off for refreshments along the trail so you are advised to bring water and something to eat

You need to be wearing the right clothing and take the proper gear when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What should you take when you go on a hike?

What you should have in your rucksack (for a day trip a 25/30L capacity should do):

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency

Emergency telephone number:  112

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, rocky slab or steep trail can be dangerous unless you are wearing the proper footwear.

And finally... ... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views you come across all over Garda Trentino. And if you like, you can share your memories with us at #GardaTrentino.
