This fabulous trekking route is located in a natural environment which is absolutely uncontaminated and panoramic, a true natural balcony overlooking the entire area of Bleggio-Lomaso-Giudicarie Esteriori, and the ideal spot from which to admire the peaks of the Brenta and Carè Alto – Presanella ranges. The area is still quite wild, semi-deserted and is not well-known by excursionists; for this reason you are likely to encounter a hunter or herds of chamoix, especially near the top of the mountain. Bears also live in this area but they are a silent presence and (fortunately) are not seen very often. The best time to take this excursion is in the crisp days of Autumn when the incredible colours of nature are exalted by the clear sunlight.

Monte Brugnol

Turn-by-turn directions

Take the steep tarmac road behind the church. At the crossroads, still in town, go straight uphill; the road soon becomes dirt and partially cobblestoned.

Proceed on the forest road which goes uphill in the thick forest. Turn left at the only crossroads encountered along this road (SAT signpost No. 348) and continue on the dirt road.

The forest road goes up for about 500 m with a long series of small hairpin bends and reaches a widening where the steep road ends at an altitude of 1339 m.

You now proceed on a mule track that goes uphill along a marked route (red and white signposts) going diagonally to the left. This track still shows the signs of the sleighs (sderdole) used in past centuries for the haymaking – in some places you can see furrows which are deeper than 10 cm.

The mule track exits the forest at an altitude of about 1600 m   and becomes a good trail across the beautiful, panoramic pastures of Valandro. Proceed uphill passing through the crossroads of “Prati di Valandro” (1650 m) and continuing uphill (signpost No. 348).

You now turn to the right (signpost No. 348) ignoring the track going straight ahead. In this way you reach a kind of pass from which you then proceed to the left. You will see two elevations above you, each of which is marked by a cross: the first is an unnamed elevation (altitude 1880 m); the second, higher one is our arrival point, Monte Brugnol.

Follow the signpost for trail No. 348 to reach Malga di Valandro (1871 m). Go uphill behind the mountain dairy and continue on the trail, marked by poles planted in the grass. Climb up making two zigzags and crossing to the right; you will reach a kind of pass (1978 m) located at the feet of the eastern ridge of Monte Brugnol.

You now leave trail No. 348 and go up to the left to cross the grassy eastern ridge up to the peak of Monte Brugnol (2222 m), marked by a large summit cross with logbook.

From the top, instead of retracing your steps back down, you can continue down along the southern ridge (as indicated by the GPS trace). Go straight down towards the cross which is visible on the 1880-m elevation (not far from Malga Valandro). From here you can go back to the former route or you can go to the left (towards Malga Valandro) or go around to the right (facing the valley). Be careful, the grassy slope is very steep and slippery.

As an alternative, you can retrace your steps back to the departure point.

Getting there

Follow national road SS237 of Caffaro up to Villa Banale. Proceed to the left for Stenico (signs) and then towards Sclemo. Right before reaching Sclemo turn to the left through the inhabited area of Seo. You can park in front of the lovely church located in the extreme eastern part of this small village (38 km from Trento).

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike

There is nowhere to stop off for refreshments along the trail so you are advised to bring water and something to eat

You need to be wearing the right clothing and take the proper gear when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What should you take when you go on a hike?

What you should have in your rucksack (for a day trip a 25/30L capacity should do):

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency

Emergency telephone number:  112

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, rocky slab or steep trail can be dangerous unless you are wearing the proper footwear.

And finally... ... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views you come across all over Garda Trentino. And if you like, you can share your memories with us at #GardaTrentino.
