The small town of Coredo, with its quaint old buildings, is the departure point as well as the arrival of this interesting loop trail.
From the centre of town, follow the main road up towards Smarano until you get to trail marker 537 “Viale dei sogni” (literally, Dream avenue) on your left. Follow the avenue leading into the thick of the pine forest until you reach the Lakes of Coredo. Here, continue along the gravel road to the pilaster in “el Palù” where the road begins to drop and continue to follow trail marker 537 until you reach Doss Canestin. Then, continue along the road downhill (trail marker 535), across a charming narrow valley where the rock walls have been equipped for rock climbing, you will reach the charming Sanctuary of S. Romedio from above. This sanctuary has always been a pilgrimage destination for visitors from all over the world. It was built and extended several times, and is perched on a rock so that the internal staircase in the oldest part of the building appears to be leading up to the sky.
You’ll find a café and an enclosure where bears live at the Sanctuary. From the Sanctuary, take the asphalt road leading into the gorge towards Sanzeno and after about 400 m climb to the right along the charming and panoramic trail which has been dug out of the rock leading directly to Sanzeno Retic Museum. You’ll come across a number of rock climbing walls along the trail.
The Retic Museum is the centre for the history of Val di Non, from the ice age until late antiquity and it contains the most significant archaeological finds in the region. From the museum, take the road leading down to the centre of Sanzeno where the Basilica of SS.Martiri is located.
To hike back, return to the state road and descend approximately 400 m until you find a road on your left (trail marker 504) which climbs up through the orchards towards a wooded area that you need to cross to get to Ciavasoz. From here, take the asphalt road (trail marker 504) to get to Coredo.
Variant: when the tractor-track (trail marker 504) becomes a mule track on the right, there is a new trail on the right, which is initially a tractor-track and then turns into a footpath, which allows you to admire an enormous spruce tree, the plant monument of the valley. You end up on a gravel road, which is then asphalt surfaced and takes you to Coredo in about 20 minutes.
