BOCCA DI TRAT "NINO PERNICI"

The spires of the Guglie di Pichea resemble a stone castle and the Rifugio Bocca di Trat “Nino Pernici” has the appearance of guardhouse in an area of enormous strategic importance for the defence of the Upper Garda during the Great War. It was built in 1929 by the Riva branch of SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) on the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian officers' mess. The relatively low altitude (1,600 metres) and the influence of the lake make it accessible all year round, whether to discover historic sites or to explore the little wild valleys with their astonishing variety of flora and fauna. The refuge is also on the Peace Path, which here takes you by way of Bocca Savàl and Bocca Giumela to Rocchetta, Cima Sperone and Cima Capi, where you can see Austrian fortifications dug into the rock (4 hours, difficulty E). A 30-minute walk from the refuge (difficulty E) is the Caverna Riccabona, an Austrian military emplacement carved into the rock.
