The beautiful trail 605 makes it possible to reach the Fedaia walking beneath the incredible northern face of the Gran Vernel and of the Marmolada.

Author’s recommendation

The higher part of trail 605 is also known as “Via Nèva”, a mule track made by Russian prisoners during the Great War. You can further explore this topic with a visit to the nearby Museo della Grande Guerra [Museum of the Great War], located at the Fedaia near the Pian dei Fiacconi cablecar.

Destination

Rifugio Castiglioni Marmolada (2044m)

Turn-by-turn directions

You walk along the paved road, following the signs for trail 605. The road soon becomes a dirt road. Walking up a slight incline, you continue to follow the signs for trail 605, and reach “Villa Maria” (1680m). Here you will find the hotel of the same name, which lies on the remains of an Austrian hospital dating back to World War I. Heading into the gorge situated beneath the “Col de Mer”, you continue along the mule track marked by trail number 605, on a steeper slope. After having reached the “Via Crucis”, you reach “Cappella - Crist de Fedaa” at an elevation of 1780 m.

The path continues on less steep terrain, and leads to Col di Ciampié locality where, at about 1850 m asl, you ignore the sign for trail number 618 on the right, and continue straight along trail 605. The final part of the trail is steeper. You walk through sparse vegetation on a slope that still shows the signs of the structures that formed the Austrian rear lines during the Great War. With a final bit of effort, you reach Rifugio Ettore Castiglioni - Marmolada.

You return along the same route.

VARIATION

The mountain hut, located almost on the Fedaia dam wall, is easily reached by car.
