Ponale - Rifugio Pernici (732)
Alpine landscapes and Mediterranean atmospheres fused into a 40 km route with a 1600 m drop.
difficult
Distance 39.2 km
The beauty and the variety of the scenery are well worth the effort: the blue waters of Lake Ledro, Val Concei, a patchwork of fields and meadows surrounded by mountains and woods, the verdant pastures of Trat, the descent overlooking Lake Garda, Riva and its alleys leading down to the port, the breathtaking views from the Ponale path and the ascent across Valle di Ledro and its villages…
Author’s recommendation
Bocca di Trat and the Ponale path were important strategic locations for the Austrian Army during the First World War and were thus intensely fortified and entrenched.
A few minutes from Bocca Trat is Rifugio Pernici, a mountain hut and a former Austrian barracks, where it is possible to stay the night and take refreshment during the opening period.

Turn-by-turn directions
In Pieve we turn into Via Rabaglia and we cycle towards Val Concei along the old asphalt road now closed to traffic. We cross the village of Locca and we take Via di Carpeà. From the playground we cycle along country lanes to Enguiso and then to Lenzumo. At the sawmill we take the asphalt road leading to Malga Trat. From the malga we follow the dirt road to Bocca Trat and Rifugio Pernici. We cycle back to Bocca Trat and we take the dirt (later asphalt) road leading to Malga Grassi, Campi and Riva del Garda. We reach the hydroelectric plant and we follow the Sentiero del Ponale. Before the last tunnel we turn left. This path joins the cycling path avoiding the main road. We reach Molina and from here we cycle along the southern shore of the lake (Pur) and we return to Pieve. The Ponale is an Alpine trail and must be used carefully. Bikers must limit their speed and be aware of pedestrians.
