In 2006 this climb was twinned with Alpe d’Huez, the legendary climb of the Tour de France. It has, in fact, similar characteristics, even if it is slightly longer. It is a severe test for the more experienced cyclists who, on these slopes, test the state of form by fighting against the clock. It is a very popular climb on hot summer days, when the branches of the forest shade the roadway.

It starts from the crossroads in Assizzi, at the exit from Pergine, on the former Valsugana state road. The road starts immediately uphill and, for the first 5 kilometers, continues to climb without interruption. It gives a little respite only at the height of the small town of Vignola, then it continues, alternating slopes of around eight per cent with false plateaus, up to the locality of Compet, where it is reached by exceeding 1300 meters of altitude. From here there are still 5 challenging kilometers to go on a fairly wide and regular road. Upon arrival, off the bicycle, you will notice a metal panel that highlights the similarities between the ascent of the Panarotta and that of Alpe d'Huez. Panarotta is a summer destination for cyclists, but also a winter destination for skiers and snowshoes. The cuisine of the typical restaurants of the area is particularly appreciated. Traces of the Great War also remain on the Panarotta. The defense front of the Austro-Hungarian Empire ran along this line. A belt of barracks and trenches recovered thanks to careful and intelligent work.
