Gornergrat is the tourist mecca where everyone goes to get their photographs of the Matterhorn. If you are going up there during high season expect the train to be crowded with tourists. On arrival at Gornergrat you will probably want to spend a few moments taking in the view before heading back down the trail towards Zermatt.

Note de l'auteur

Take the earliest train you can up the mountain or go late in the day to limit the number of hikers and tourists you will find on the train or trails.

Consignes de sécurité

Shortly before Riffelsee and Riffelalp the trail gets quite technical. The most difficult section is before Riffelsee where it is advisable to walk a couple of hundred metres.

Conseils et recommandations supplémentaires

On a sunny day the Hitta at Riffelalp is a nice place for a short break.

Zermatt

Itinéraire

From the viewing area at Gornergrat take the single track towards Riffelsee. The trail section to Riffelsee is quite technical and during high season is very busy with hikers. From Riffelsee there is a choice of three different ways.

We suggest the route which bypasses Riffelboden and loops around towards Riffelalp. Between Riffelsee and Riffelalp the trail is for the most part quite flowy except for a short section shortly before Riffelalp which is a hike-a-bike for everyone except the most skilled of riders.

From Riffelalp cross the railway lines and take the hiking trail signposted for Zermatt. This section of trail is a great mixture of fast flowing single trail with some very tight switchbacks which winds its way through the woods right down to the town in Zermatt.

This is a must do trail for anyone who likes scenic Alpine trails. The best time to do it would be mid week during the off peak seasons for tourists.

Toutes les notes sur les zones protégées

En transports en commun

There are two connections to Zermatt from Visp per hour (08 and 41 minutes past the hour). The Gornergrat cogwheel railway is just accross the road from the train station in Zermatt.

Par la route

From Bern take the A6 (From Zurich A4/A14/A2/A8) exit for Kandersteg. In Kandersteg put your car on the train to Goppenstein and follow signposts for Visp. In Visp follow signposting for Täsch/Zermatt.

Se garer

There is a large carpark in the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch. You will need to take the train from Täsch to Zermatt.
